Poland Spring's Fascinating
History
Poland Spring in its early years was inhabited by an
Indian Tribe and then used as grazing land by the Shakers. In
the 1790's, Jabez Ricker traded his land in Alfred Maine with the Shakers for Poland
Spring. With a main road dividing it, many stage coaches traveled
through it. He
and his sons, Wentworth, Samuel, and Joseph began construction of a large,
two-story gable-roofed house to be used as a stagecoach stop. At its door was
hung this simple sign:
WENTWORTH RICCAR 1797. Montreal to Boston stage lines made Poland Spring a regular stop. Others followed and in a short time it became
the best known Inn
in Maine. Business thrived and there was talk almost immediately of adding rooms
to the Inn.
The Ricker Family no longer owns Poland Spring but their legacy lives on. In the
150 years they owned Poland Spring, they left over
100 buildings, three hotels, and over 5000 acres of grounds. The golf course was the
first built in America at a resort. Kings, queens, oil barons, Babe Ruth,
presidents; they all came to Poland Spring to enjoy the views, the golf course and of
course, the best water anywhere.
Today you may visit these Poland Spring
historic buildings....all on the National Register of Historic Places... all
within walking distance from the Maine Inn!
Poland Spring's History
is a long story about which many books have been written and this is only a short glimpse!

Maine State Building

Museum
of Poland Spring history and the Nettie Ricker Art
Gallery.
In 1891, Hiram Ricker was given a
special award at the Columbia Exposition in Chicago. The Columbian Exposition of
1893 commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus’
discovery of America and
was a notable event. It was lighted by electricity and featured most of
America's innovations of the 19th century. The Maine State Building was
built to display Maine products at the Exposition. The Rickers bought Maine State Building for
$30,000 and made arrangements for dismantling the building and shipping
it, by freight train, back to Maine. It took 16 freight cars to accomplish
the task!

Historic Poland Spring Water Plant
1906 Bottling Plant
A major overhaul of the process for packaging Poland Water
took place in 1906 & 1907 when Hiram Riccar erected a new springhouse and bottling
plant. The Poland Spring springhouse, of Spanish design, featured interior walls and columns
made of Italian Pavonazzo marble and mosaic floors. Poland Spring encased the original
spring itself in Carrara marble and plate glass with a solid bronze grille.
Silver and glass pipes carried water from one
spring into highly polished granite tanks sealed with plate glass.
Today it is
beautifully restored as a museum

Poland Spring's Original Source!
Hiram Riccar, Wentworth’s son, had a
huge responsibility. In
early spring of
1844, Hiram wandered out to his fields and laid down
in a meadow. The only thing that sustained his life
was water from spring. Days later, he returned to
the house with a hearty appetite he hadn't
enjoyed in many years. So passed the “humors” of his
stomach and his ruddy good health was returned to
him. He related the tale of the miracle cure with
the water to his doctor. Seeing his patient in
better health than ever before, the good doctor asked that a
barrel of the wonderful “elixir” be sent to him on
the next stage. One month later, Doctor Clark sought
out Hiram and told him that each patient to whom he
had given this Poland Water had made remarkable
recoveries. He wished to purchase the water for
prescription purposes. Before long physicians in
Boston, New York, and Philadelphia were demanding
that water be sent to them for dispensing to their
patients. Wagon masters heading westward heard of
the unusual quality of Poland Water. They too bought
hundreds of barrels for their long westward treks.
For the same reasons, there was hardly a clipper
ship that left New England ports that did not carry
Poland Water. |
