Maine golf heritage scramble

The Links at Poland Spring

Oldest Resort Golf Course in the United States

We Need Your Help Saving Maine’s

Heritage For Future Generations

The purpose of this first of its kind golf tournament in Maine is two fold. First, to raise the funds needed to protect and nurture the very things we highlight in this event -- our golden Maine heritage, and, in this case, the Maine State Building and the All Souls Chapel. Both are owned by the Poland Spring Preservation Society, a non profit society, that cares and preserves these two buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Second, Poland Spring Resort’s golf course which is the oldest resort golf course in the United States -- is a very fitting location to have an event of this kind. This beautiful course was designed by a course architect known by all knowledgeable golfers around the globe -- Mr. Donald Ross himself. It’s also the course, in it’s present layout, that the greatest golfers in the world traveled very long distances to play. Some of the more notable golfers who played here included Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Arthur Fenn, and the man who even unto this day has won more British Opens than any other golfer who ever played the game -- the venerable Harry Vardon.

To give you the opportunity to understand just how great some of these golfers were, you’ll have the opportunity to hit some shots using the same equipment they used back in the twenties and beyond -- hickory shafted drivers, irons, and putters.

Great Color, Pageantry, and Camaraderie

This years event is going to be played in the spring when the buds are a bloom on the trees. Add the period golf attire many golfers wear and the haunting sound of live bagpipe music calling the golfers to their assigned tees and it makes a marvelous event for a wonderful cause in which all participants share. The sum total of the event is an enjoyable day with friends on some of the most hallowed golf ground in the world. It’s an event you’ll be proud to say you supported and one you’ll talk about for years to come. We look forward to seeing you here on Sunday, May 18, 2008.
